Karl-Anthony Towns, an NBA All-Star, and Jordyn Woods, a model and entrepreneur, share a profound connection through art, a common language that binds them. This week, they brought together a diverse group of art and entertainment figures at Sotheby's Breuer building for an exclusive dinner. The occasion marked the newest installment of Sotheby's Contemporary Curated auction, a collection thoughtfully assembled by the power couple.

The couple, who recently married, carefully selected ten pieces for this biannual sale. This initiative invites high-profile guest curators from creative fields beyond the traditional art world. Their chosen artworks, from celebrated artists such as George Condo, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Helen Frankenthaler, Alma Thomas, John Chamberlain, and Rashid Johnson, were handpicked based on their individual tastes and personal relationships with the artists. Woods, despite Towns's demanding NBA finals schedule, played a pivotal role in the selection process, ensuring the collection mirrored their mutual artistic inclinations and influences. Towns, with his East Coast background, gravitated towards masters like Basquiat and Warhol, while Woods, influenced by her multimedia artist brother Joshua and her upbringing near Los Angeles, developed an early appreciation for art. Both maintain an open mind towards emerging and lesser-known artists, embracing works that challenge conventional norms.

Their journey with art is marked by serendipitous encounters. Condo, who attended their wedding, previously created a unique trading card featuring Towns's portrait for a sports memorabilia brand. Towns also shares a friendship with Johnson, whose work was the first he acquired for his personal collection. Additionally, Towns holds a special admiration for two Lichtenstein pieces, an artist whose style Woods extensively studied during her academic years. He humorously admitted that these works almost compelled him to make an impulsive purchase, a testament to their captivating appeal. Charles Stewart, CEO of Sotheby's, noted that the couple's genuine enthusiasm for art was a key factor in inviting them to participate in the Contemporary Curated program. He believes these events are crucial for attracting new collectors and art lovers, demonstrating that the art world can be accessible and inviting. Stewart emphasized that the couple's joint selections, especially as newlyweds, infuse an added layer of charm and significance into the collection, describing it as a "love story" deeply intertwined with art.

The exhibition opened its doors to the public on October 2 at the Breuer in New York, with the live auction scheduled for October 7. The collaboration between Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordyn Woods serves as a powerful reminder that art transcends boundaries, finding its way into diverse spheres of life and inspiring meaningful connections. Their curatorial endeavor not only showcases exceptional artworks but also highlights the beauty of shared passions and mutual inspiration, proving that a love for art can enrich personal relationships and foster cultural engagement.
