Berluti, a distinguished luxury brand, is embarking on a transformative journey under the leadership of CEO Jean-Marc Mansvelt, aiming to redefine the essence of high-end experiences. At the heart of this new direction is Parenthèse, an exclusive, invite-only sanctuary located within its Ginza flagship in Tokyo. This innovative space is designed to offer a respite from the demands of modern life, fostering genuine connections and a sense of community among its elite clientele, rather than focusing on immediate sales. Mansvelt's vision challenges the prevailing luxury model, which he believes has eroded trust between brands and consumers due to rising prices and perceived diminishing quality. By prioritizing intimacy, exclusivity, and a slower, more deliberate approach to growth, Berluti seeks to restore the moral contract of luxury, emphasizing human connection and curated experiences over widespread accessibility and rapid expansion.

The concept of Parenthèse is a deliberate departure from traditional VIP rooms, where spending is often an unspoken expectation. Instead, it functions more like a sophisticated listening bar, providing a tranquil environment where clients can unwind, share conversations, and forge deeper relationships with the brand and each other. This initiative reflects Mansvelt's broader strategy to cultivate a more consolidated and exclusive vision for Berluti. He advocates for smaller, more intimate retail spaces, contrasting them with the expansive, supermarket-like flagships common in the luxury sector. This selective approach extends to store openings, with recent relocations to more local-centric areas like Via Gesù in Milan and a boutique in Shenzhen, China, underscoring a commitment to quality over quantity.

Berluti's strategic shift appears to be yielding positive results, insulating the brand from broader economic headwinds. While the luxury market, including its parent company LVMH, has faced challenges such as declining fashion and leather goods revenue, Berluti has maintained "good momentum." Mansvelt attributes this resilience to the brand's unique positioning and its cautious approach to market expansion, particularly in regions like China, where it has remained an "outsider" and thus less impacted by recent downturns. Furthermore, Berluti has moved away from the star designer model, opting instead for a team of in-house talents focused on refining and upholding the brand's core identity, ensuring a consistent and authentic product line.

Parenthèse itself is meticulously designed to immerse clients in the Berluti universe. Beyond the grand salon, a shoe library showcases 110 hand-painted illustrations of Berluti footwear, while another room provides a bespoke customization experience with leather swatches for clothing and accessories. This multi-faceted space encourages prolonged engagement, subtly creating opportunities for clients to explore and acquire Berluti's exquisite offerings. Membership to this exclusive haven is by invitation, extended to significant Berluti clients globally, as well as friends and connoisseurs of the brand, echoing the spirit of Olga Berluti's legendary Swann Club from the 1990s, which fostered a similar sense of belonging among like-minded enthusiasts.

The choice of Japan as the inaugural location for Parenthèse is strategic, given its status as Berluti's largest market, with 90% of its clientele being local. The country boasts 17 boutiques and a dedicated workshop of skilled artisans, reflecting a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and personalization. While shoes are popular in Europe, Japanese clients favor leather goods and embrace the customization process, such as adding the iconic Scritto pattern or bespoke decorations to their items. Mansvelt acknowledges the challenge of quantifying the return on investment for such a qualitative project within a KPI-driven corporate environment like LVMH. However, he emphasizes the personal connection of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault to Berluti, suggesting a unique latitude for the brand to pursue its vision. The success of Parenthèse, if replicated in other regions, will ultimately be measured not by immediate sales, but by the cultivation of enduring customer loyalty and a renewed sense of humanity within the luxury experience.
