Dia Art Foundation's Annual Fall Night Celebrates Art and Transition

On a recent Monday night, the stretch between Dia Chelsea on West 22nd Street and the neighboring Storied NYC event venue transformed into a vibrant promenade. Following an exhibition showcasing the works of Argentine artist David Lamelas, approximately 400 attendees convened for a sophisticated cocktail reception and a beautifully illuminated dinner, all in support of the Dia Art Foundation.
Chanel's esteemed creative director, Matthieu Blazy, made a special trip to co-host the non-profit organization's yearly Fall Night celebration, alongside celebrated contemporary artists Carrie Mae Weems and Rosemarie Trockel. The evening's luminaries, British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen and New York-born writer and artist Roni Horn, were the focus of much acclaim, with notable figures such as Sofia Coppola and Marion Cotillard attending to honor them. Artist Matthew Barney delivered a heartfelt tribute to his long-standing friend, Roni Horn, acknowledging her multifaceted talent and profound impact. Later, the musician and poet Meshell Ndegeocello presented a captivating spoken-word and performance piece, gracefully weaving through the candlelit tables, as a special homage to McQueen.
This event signified the second successful collaboration between Chanel and the Dia Art Foundation, highlighting a flourishing partnership. Concurrently, it marked the conclusion of an impactful era for Jessica Morgan, the foundation's director. After 12 years of dedicated service, Morgan is embarking on a new chapter, heading across the Atlantic to assume the directorship of Tate in London. Reflecting on her tenure, she expressed immense satisfaction in upholding the foundation's core vision and mission, emphasizing the significant transformation and tripling of the collection under her leadership, bringing in a multitude of diverse and compelling artistic voices, many of whom were present that evening. Nathalie de Gunzburg, the board chair, also acknowledged Morgan's exceptional contributions and leadership, particularly her comprehensive understanding of the institution's operations, from infrastructure to conservation and programming, in addition to her personal strength as a woman. Morgan, with a touch of humor, proudly announced that Dia is close to achieving its $200 million endowment goal, underscoring her confidence in the foundation's future while playfully warning against any mismanagement.
This gathering beautifully underscored the enduring power of art to unite, inspire, and foster community, while also celebrating leadership, dedication, and the continuous evolution of cultural institutions. It served as a poignant reminder that while individuals may transition, the collective spirit and mission of promoting artistic expression and preserving cultural heritage continue to thrive and expand.
