Fashion Week's Afterparties: A Shift from Celebration to Strategic Marketing

Fashion Week afterparties, once spontaneous celebrations, have transformed into meticulously planned marketing events. What began as casual gatherings for designers and their teams following runway shows has evolved into a strategic component of brand promotion. However, this shift has sparked discussions among industry insiders regarding the authenticity and purpose of these events, with many expressing concern over the increasing emphasis on metrics and influencer engagement at the expense of genuine connection and curated experiences.

Initially, post-show festivities were simple affairs. Tom Burkitt, former music director of the renowned London club Lost, recalls a time when these events were informal team get-togethers, a chance to unwind and celebrate a successful show. The concept of a dedicated 'fashion week party' was nascent. Brands now recognize the unique opportunity these parties offer, reaching a much larger audience than a runway show alone. Burkitt notes that with a DJ playing for at least an hour and the capacity to host thousands of guests, parties amplify brand visibility and generate widespread social media buzz.

London Fashion Week recently showcased a myriad of such events, including McQueen's afterparty featuring Vegyn and Kelly Lee Owens, H&M's performance by Kim Petras, and Labrum's takeover of Fabric. Similarly, New York hosted numerous gatherings, from Acne Studios' house party with Jackson and a performance by 070 Shake, to Bvlgari's Serpenti Infinito celebration and Dior's collaboration with A24 at the Cherry Lane Theater.

Despite their popularity, the increasing commercialization of these parties has drawn criticism. Shaun Ross, a model and DJ with two decades of fashion industry experience, voiced his concerns in a viral video, arguing that the curation of guest lists has deteriorated. He believes that the focus has shifted from inviting a diverse mix of cultural pioneers, muses, editors, and socialites to prioritizing individuals with large social media followings, regardless of their genuine connection to the brand or contribution to the atmosphere. Ross laments that brands are often more concerned with numbers, sales, and follower counts than with thoughtful curation.

Mina Galán, DJ and founder of Club Stamina, echoes these sentiments, emphasizing that a fashion party should organically extend the brand's universe. She observes a lack of accuracy, with many brands defaulting to the same DJs and attendees, simply adding 'whoever is popular' and filling rooms with influencers for reach. Galán argues that this approach often leads to inauthentic experiences, where events fail to align with the brand's core identity. Burkitt agrees, questioning the purpose of events when attendees have multiple options and brands simply set up generic warehouse parties with free bars and goodie bags.

However, successful alternative models demonstrate that the appetite for engaging parties remains strong. Anthem, a karaoke night founded by Balenciaga creative consultant Fiona Hartley and AllSaints head of marketing Zac Klein, started as a casual gathering for friends but has grown into a fashion industry favorite. It embraces a democratic spirit, welcoming models, designers, students, and behind-the-scenes professionals, fostering genuine interaction without the pressure of formal networking. The emphasis is on low-pressure fun and creating a memorable experience rather than performative social media moments.

Another successful approach involves enforcing a "no phones" policy, as seen at Emily Dawn Long's "No One Dances Anymore" disco party in New York. By encouraging guests to engage with the moment rather than document it, such events cultivate a more immersive and authentic atmosphere. Industry veterans like Ross advocate for more imaginative spending, suggesting collaborations with iconic DJs and collectives that possess genuine cultural relevance, rather than solely relying on fleeting trends and instant gratification. Brands should seek partnerships with individuals and communities that have a true connection to their ethos, ensuring that events have a meaningful purpose beyond mere logo placement.

For example, Galán's collaboration with Nike and Knwls for Club Stamina showcased a co-created experience, where teams collaboratively built the venue and curated the guest list. This resulted in a vibrant night featuring VTSS, Slim Soledad, Bapari, and a surprise set by Arca. This approach demonstrates that when different worlds genuinely overlap and identities are integrated, the event gains a deeper significance, creating a shared cultural logic that transcends a simple promotional gathering.
