Frank Aghuno, the creative force driving Fruche, recently brought his latest collection to Lagos, fresh off his triumph at Berlin Fashion Week where he secured the contemporary prize. His inaugural international showcase was a resounding success, and he was keen to share this acclaimed collection with his Nigerian audience, marking a significant moment for the Lagos-based designer.

This collection served as an invitation to appreciate inherent flaws and unique characteristics. Aghuno underscored this theme by highlighting how "handwork can possess an inherent imperfection," referencing natural variations in carved wooden beads or the nuanced irregularities resulting from the dyeing process. He emphasized that these distinctive traits were woven throughout the collection, evident in both meticulously styled ensembles and more unconventional, intricate designs.

Drawing inspiration from Nigerian boarding school uniforms, gingham patterns were a prominent feature, reimagined in diverse forms. This included traditional cotton gingham, aso oke gingham—a Nigerian textile—beaded gingham, and adire gingham, which utilizes a conventional resist-dyeing technique. While the silhouettes exuded modernity, time-honored crafting methods remained central to the collection's identity. Aghuno's commitment to collaborating with local Nigerian artisans was evident, from the fabric selection to the intricate wood carving. The cotton was sourced from Katsina and milled within Nigeria, reflecting his dedication to local production. He proudly stated, "Everything is sourced here, and every look was crafted across the country," adding that he diligently sought out skilled collaborators, even discovering artisans through platforms like TikTok, showcasing the depth of Nigerian culture and the innovative work being produced today.

Among the collection's standout pieces were a satin dress and shirt adorned with hand-painted artwork by Aghuno's twin brother, Dricky, an artist based in Lagos and London. The finale of the show was particularly memorable: a model graced the runway in an ensemble crafted from wood-carved shells, her entrance perfectly synchronized with the fading music. A hush fell over the audience as they leaned forward, captivated by the gentle, rhythmic sound of the beads, a moment of profound quiet rarely experienced in the vibrant city of Lagos.

This collection from Fruche stands as a powerful testament to the beauty of authenticity and the enduring spirit of cultural heritage. By embracing natural imperfections and championing local craftsmanship, Frank Aghuno not only creates fashion but also tells a story of artistic integrity and community pride. His work inspires us to find elegance in the unrefined and to celebrate the rich narratives embedded in traditional art forms, reminding us that true beauty often lies in originality and a deep connection to one's roots.
