A resurgence in American selvedge denim is underway, championed by Mount Vernon Mills, which has meticulously restored antique Draper X3 looms. Mike McLachlan of Manresa, a Connecticut-based apparel brand, highly values selvedge denim for its distinctive character and historical accuracy, drawing parallels to mid-20th-century Levi’s. This commitment to authentic, traditional denim resonates with enthusiasts who appreciate the fabric's rich texture and enduring quality, distinguishing it from mass-produced modern alternatives. The revival efforts by Mount Vernon Mills signify a renewed dedication to the craftsmanship and legacy of American denim, promising a future where consumers can once again access this unique, high-quality material.

Mount Vernon Mills, a textile powerhouse with a 180-year history, initiated this ambitious project by acquiring and restoring 21 Draper X3 looms from the former Cone White Oak mill. These looms, some dating back to the 1950s, were the backbone of American selvedge production, supplying denim to iconic brands like Levi’s and Wrangler. Following the closure of White Oak in 2017, the future of domestic selvedge seemed uncertain until Mount Vernon Mills stepped in, purchasing the equipment at auction after a previous revival attempt by Vidalia Mills faltered. This strategic acquisition, despite the significant challenge of restoring decades-old machinery, underscores Mount Vernon Mills' dedication to preserving and advancing American textile heritage. With about 20 looms now operational and symbolically named after cultural icons, the mill is ready to produce authentic selvedge denim, bridging the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary demand.

Despite the slower production pace of antique shuttle looms compared to modern machinery, Mount Vernon Mills anticipates producing 20,000 yards of selvedge per week at full capacity, demonstrating a significant investment in a niche market. The enthusiastic response from brands like Moredocks, a Portland-based custom jeans maker, highlights the strong demand for this unique fabric, especially from smaller designers who typically struggle to meet minimum order requirements from larger mills. This new program at Mount Vernon Mills offers a crucial opportunity for these artisans to access high-quality, handcrafted denim, fostering a community that values the artistry and story behind each pair of jeans. As McLachlan prepares to launch his signature 207 jeans made from Mount Vernon Mills denim, and eagerly anticipates the unique fading patterns that will develop, this initiative marks not just a revival of a textile, but a celebration of American craftsmanship and enduring style.

This endeavor goes beyond mere textile production; it represents a profound commitment to preserving a legacy and fostering community. By embracing traditional methods and providing opportunities for small businesses, Mount Vernon Mills is not only crafting exceptional denim but also weaving a narrative of resilience, innovation, and shared passion for quality. It embodies the spirit of American ingenuity, showing that with dedication and vision, cherished traditions can be revitalized for future generations, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the value of artisanal products.
