During Frieze Week in London, at a gathering held at The Hart, an array of Church's footwear, including the Stanhope Chelsea boot and the Susan ankle boot, was showcased. These iconic British shoe styles, products of the Northampton shoemaker founded in 1873 and later acquired by Prada Group in 1999, were presented under the supervision of Denni Manzatto, Church's CEO since 2022. Manzatto, who had an earlier encounter with Church's during his private equity days, emphasized the brand's unique significance within the Prada Group, despite its relatively smaller business scale, viewing it as a valuable asset worthy of preservation and growth.

Church's boasts a rich history of innovation, exemplified by its 1881 'Adapted' boot, which pioneered industrial-scale production of differentiated left and right shoes. The company's manufacturing process, rooted in Northampton's medieval shoemaking tradition, continues to employ skilled artisans, a practice that has allowed Church's to thrive amidst the decline of local shoemaking since its peak in 1955. Prada's acquisition of Church's in 1999 was driven by a romantic appreciation for its English heritage and manufacturing base, with a clear commitment from Patrizio Bertelli to maintain and develop its British identity and industrial presence in Northampton. This long-standing fascination underpins Prada's current strategy to reinvigorate the brand.

Upon assuming leadership in 2022, Manzatto faced a challenging business environment, prompting a strategic move to integrate Church's more deeply into Prada Group's corporate, industrial, technological, and commercial infrastructure. A key ambition is to consolidate all Church's production, including categories traditionally manufactured in Italy, back to the UK within the next few years. This initiative necessitates significant investment in both the factory and its workforce, including the development of new craftspeople to replace retiring shoemakers. Despite facing post-Brexit duties, rising employment costs, and the loss of tax-free shopping, Prada Group is doubling down on its commitment to the UK, leveraging its resources to ensure Church's continued success and expansion into new markets like North America, while maintaining its focus on iconic, continuity products and exceptional workmanship.

Church's commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship while embracing strategic integration and investment from Prada Group demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to heritage brand management. This dedication not only safeguards the legacy of British shoemaking but also cultivates a new generation of artisans, ensuring that quality, innovation, and enduring style continue to thrive in the global luxury market. The story of Church's exemplifies how a rich past can fuel a vibrant future, driven by passion, strategic vision, and an unwavering belief in excellence.
