A Visual Journey Through History: "Vogue Portraits" Unveils Decades of Iconic Photography

The Enduring Legacy of Irving Penn: A Master's Approach to Portraiture
Upon assuming the editorship of Vogue in 1988, I harbored a profound respect, tinged with apprehension, for Irving Penn. He was an imposing figure, a titan in modernist photography, already in his seventies. His approach to portraiture was akin to a meditative practice, transforming each sitting into a profound artistic endeavor. The images he created in his New York studio possessed an almost mystical power, revealing the raw, unadulterated essence of his subjects—be they actors, writers, politicians, or athletes.
"Vogue Portraits": A Deep Dive into Six Decades of Editorial Excellence
The profound impact of Irving Penn is evident throughout "Vogue Portraits," a new two-volume anthology from Abrams. While Vogue has previously published numerous photography collections, this particular work stands out. Spanning 640 pages, it meticulously chronicles the magazine's features department, a division consistently focused on the broader world—encompassing politics, sports, entertainment, theater, and fine art.
A Pantheon of Photographic Talents and Their Subjects
This collection encapsulates six decades of historical moments and cultural shifts, featuring an incredible array of individuals. From global leaders and celebrated athletes to acclaimed poets, dancers, and movie stars, the pages come alive through the artistry of photographers such as Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Horst P. Horst, Peter Lindbergh, Cecil Beaton, and Tyler Mitchell, among many others. Mr. Penn, in particular, cherished his work on features portraits for Vogue. My initial apprehension towards him eventually dissolved into a collaborative relationship that lasted until his passing in 2009. I witnessed firsthand his unwavering artistic integrity, his firm vision, and his resistance to compromise. His sittings were characterized by meticulous preparation—beginning with sketches, followed by precise lighting adjustments, and culminating in a reverent and formal encounter with his subject. Despite his initial formality, he revealed a surprising warmth, once confiding his dislike for being called "Mr. Penn." From that moment on, he was simply Irving to me.
The Curatorial Challenge: Assembling a Visual Chronicle
Set for release on October 27th, "Vogue Portraits" was edited by Vogue's deputy editor Taylor Antrim, with insightful introductory essays by Lena Dunham and Vogue's head of content, Chloe Malle. The book is structured into five thematic chapters: "Screen Legends and Movie Stars," "Politicians, Writers, and Newsmakers," "Maestros, Divas, and Curtain Raisers," "Sports Heroes and Game-Day Champions," and "Artists, Design Mavens, and Architects." The process of selecting photographs for these chapters sparked intense debates within our art department. At one point, the project threatened to expand into five or even six volumes, a testament to the sheer volume of extraordinary material. For every iconic portrait included, countless others equally deserving could have been featured, and Vogue continues to expand this remarkable legacy with new additions daily. History, after all, is a continuous unfolding narrative.
